Jermell Charlo vs. Tim Tszyu rumored for October

Popular boxing Twitter personality Ray Jackson, better known by his handle @RayJack97010720 posted some breaking news last evening.

The popular content creator and personality sent the boxing world into a frenzy as posted information stating that the undisputed clash between the WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF junior middleweight world champion, Jermell Charlo and the WBO junior middleweight secondary champion, Tim Tszyu.

“Breaking News: Just got word that Jermell Charlo vs Tim Tszyu showdown is confirmed for October," said Jackson.

This comes on the heels of Glen Jennings, the manager of Tim Tszyu, appearing on the Hispanics Causing Panic Podcast, confirming the fight will happen.

"The fight will be in the U.S.," said on the popular aforementioned podcast, HCP Episode 120. "We've actually agreed on [the date]...it's just a timing issue now for their side to make the announcement."

For Charlo, this would be his first fight since knocking out Brian Castano last year to become the undisputed junior middleweight world champion. Charlo has yet to fight since his early summer fight last year as he was set to face Tim Tszyu in January of 2023 before a hand injury pushed back his fight date. When attempting to reschedule the fight further issues lingered which caused Tszyu to take two fights in the meantime, and become a breakout star in 2023.

Tszyu has announced himself to the world with a breakout win over Tony Harrison, once his fight with Charlo was delayed and recently returned to stop former world title challenger, Carlos Ocampo in one round. Tszyu is in the running for Fighter of the Year, and with Tszyu staying so active the perception of the fight now seems to be much closer than most people thought prior to 2023.

One interesting subplot of this news will be how the WBO handles this as they set a deadline of September 30th of Jermell Charlo to defend his world title before stripping him of the belt. One would assume they would simply allow Charlo to defend his title, but this is boxing, and that is something to watch for.
